Unlike other instruments, our vocal cords can't be securely placed in a protective case. They are exposed all year round to pollution, debris, and harsh weather. Not only that, but they are also subjected to what we do to ourselves every day. From what we eat to how we speak - our vocal cords are affected. Here are a few of my tried and true things I do to protect the most expensive instruments to repair if ever damaged.
Starting in autumn, I cover my ear, nose, and mouth with a light scarf to help keep them warm and protected. Of course, as the weather gets colder, I switch to heavier scarves, whip out the ear muffs and hat. Warmth is our best friend. It keeps the vocal cords. It keeps the muscles relaxed and increases the blood flow. I use my facial steamer frequently during the week. It's great for moisturizing the vocal cords, and cleaning out radical debris and toxins we breathe. And most of all, I drink at least two liters of water per day.
Actually, I drink two liters of water per day, all year round. For me, water is THE most important element for my vocals. In the video, I use an illustration with my hands to show how water affects our vocal cords, so be sure to check out the video. I also share the things I keep in my "Vocalist's Cabinet" in the video. Let me know what you think about it, and any improvements you would make to my list.
Lastly, on my tech rider, I (nicely) demand to have a non-smoking dressing room that has not been previously smoked in. The air conditioner must be off the entire time, and if the room is cold when I enter, there will be drama. Of course, many art directors did not take me seriously because my requests seem inconsequential or minute in their eyes. But protecting my instrument is my main concern, not their point of view. I never ask them to understand or agree with me. I only ask them to respect it. And if they don't deliver, I don't give a top-quality performance.
If you feel a little embarrassed about being so demanding in protecting your instrument, do your research on how much it will cost to repair your vocal cords. Take into consideration how your career and life will change if you can't use your instrument. Then put your Diva underwear on, and act accordingly. Stay Foxy, my Fellow Foxies!
